Is It True You Can Be Fired Without Cause?
By Gabrielle L. Strich, Esq.
- Yes, you can be fired for any reason or no reason, without just cause because the law in NJ is that you are terminable at will. However, you cannot be fired for an unlawful reason.
- Is there any way to protect my employment?
- Get a contract, either written or oral, for employment.
- Address all terms of employment ahead of time, such as salary, start date, benefit coverage (scope and start times), stock options, expenses reimbursement, confidentiality, non-compete, zipper clause, jurisdiction and choice of law and most importantly, severance provisions.
- Know your rights under the laws.
- See a lawyer before accepting employment and/or
as soon as You see you have a problem at work; don’t wait to get fired first.
